HOLLYWOOD *ACTION*

Dear Cinema....

I have always had a deep passion for films, old, new, etc. Film quality isn't exactly the same as a few years ago, but neither is the audience. On a side note, I watched When In Paris, staring Audrey Hepburn, the other day, and wow that blew me away, but I'm not saying that every once and awhile good films don't come out (ex. The Help), but often I find that lately you cant even tell what's going to be good or not because critics don't seem to appreciate anything any more. Almost like they just don't care. Cultures changed, hollywoods changed, expectations... but still we have the same critics telling me that the last film I thought was exceptional was a load of garbage. No offense but perhaps its your understanding of the new cultural standards is what's sub-par. Films are all full of remakes, superheroes and adaptations nowadays and all I read is complaints of, "how many more of these do I have to sit through..." Personally, I tend to read a lot of books and most people don't know how over looked good opportunities can be missed, so im all for adaptations. As far as remakes or prequels go, if the original was good you never know what the quality of another film will be so lets give it a chance before you try to beat it dead already. I like to see what newer actors can do differently. James Franco will be starting as "Oz" in Oz: The Great and Powerful. Its a prequel to The Wizard of Oz told from Francos' point of view about how he became the wizard, it sounds interesting, and seems to have a good cast (Mila Kunis as Theodora, and Michelle Williams as Glinda), so Im rather excited to see it (release date March 8, 2013).

Films are a reflection of the people and $$$. Studios are constantly trying to figure out how to get people to sit in the seats for a little more than an hour, and how to appeal to there audience. We live in technologically dominated times and most people are always in a hurry to get through there day. I often spend my time going to the theater to watch movies, regardless of the $11 ticket price ($8 if i make the matinee), but to me it'll always be worth it. I like to go out and spend 2 hours relaxing and giving in to "Willful Suspension of Disbelief" (the one term i learned in my film class), just long enough to be able to relax and enjoy down time. I hate the idea that in a few years we'll be just watching movies right in our house. I don't know about other people but my tv is not as big as an actual theater and there are certain Hollywood men that I enjoy watching on the big screen. Though if they come out with a Kardashian film me and the cinema will be taking a break for a little while, I have standards. Anyhow I've come to realize though that a persons opinion is there own and if you don't like what you read... Well then write it yourself. I may not know much about cinematic tricks, camera shots, or lighting, but I've got a vivid imagination and an appreciation for all film, so I'm going to focus on what I can see and what Hollywoods got in the works and share all my opinions, insights, and ideas with the masses.

I am in love with Audrey Hepburn. And I concur with your point about critics. Often times, I will look at the ratings a movie is getting, and then determine whether I should rent it from red box or not. I've determined that my method is utterly inept, and I need a new strategy.

What do you see when you watch a film?

When I watch a film I see possibilities. I know to some that may sound silly, or like a simple answers, but film is a journey and for many its an escape. Most people don't know that during the 1930-40's America was so sucked up by the great depression that people constantly were struggling to find some way to escape the world. Many writers and directors saw the great opportunity in this need and film really came into its own during this time. It allowed people a chance to withdraw from there lives and also to see things in many different ways. In 1939 the Wizard of Oz was released, a movie that when looked at in a deeper perspective is about the world during the depression and not only portrays Dorothy's escape from the life she learned she really loved, but allowed people the same. It gave hope and appreciation. I watch films usually based off of my mood, but I have a deep love for all genres. Many people forget what movies can do for them, how they can make you feel, forget, love, laugh, and cry. They can speak to even the most hardened persons in ways never imaginable. The world can be a very hard place at times, but films will always remain the same, they are designed to speak to people, we just have to be willing to listen. When I watch a film I see another world, another person, another life, another chance.. Its endless. There's a passion in it. Film is a very fine form of art. Its an expression that many people worked hard to perfect for each individual that sits in those seats in the theater. Nothing is better than watching a well made film, tastefully directed, well written, and with excellent and experienced actors who can make me believe that not only are they that character and wherever they are supposed to be, but that I've been taken there as well and I've allowed my mind and body to be completely overwhelmed in those feelings. I laugh, cry, scream, jump... whatever, but I believe.

I hope that my answer satisfies your question. It was very good, but very complicated because thats not an easy answer for me to sum up, but thank you.
